New York Comic-Con 2012

I’ll be appearing at New York Comic Con, held at the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan’s west side, on Oct. 11-14. My signing time is fairly limited, as interviews, meetings and panels are eating up a lot of my schedule. Here’s my public schedule:

Friday

5-6 p.m., Top Cow signing at Image booth, #1229

Saturday

1:30-2:30 p.m., Top Cow panel, Room 1A14

3-4 p.m., Top Cow signing at Image booth, #1229

6:30-7:30 p.m., Israel Idonije and Ron Marz Tackle Graphic Novels panel, Room 1A14

I’ll be joined on the Top Cow panel by Matt Hawkins, Jeremy Haun, David Hine and Tim Seeley. We’ll be talking about what’s coming up in the new Rebirth-era Top Cow Universe, including my Artifacts title. For more information on the top Cow panel, go here:

http://nycc12.mapyourshow.com/5_0/sessions/sessiondetails.cfm?ScheduledSessionID=18AECC

There will be a NYCC Exclusive edition of Artifacts #21, with a new cover by Stjepan Sejic, available for sale at the Image booth.

The Tackling Comics panel is something new and different. Israel Idonije is a starting defensive end for the Chicago Bears, as well as a comics fan. He’s started his own company, Athleta Comics, which will be making its debut at NYCC. I’m writing the first project from Athleta, called The Protectors, with my buddy Bart Sears providing the art. You’ll be able to find out much more about Athleta and The Protectors at the panel, so I really hope you make the time to attend. For more information on the panel, which will also include Michael and David Uslan, and Aaron Feuer, go here:

http://nycc12.mapyourshow.com/5_0/sessions/sessiondetails.cfm?ScheduledSessionID=1BA8C7

The panel will also feature a free, exclusive art print by Bart Sears, T-shirt giveaways, and some pretty grand surprises that Israel has been planning. Definitely worth an hour of your time.

The Athleta Comics booth is #3032 on the NYCC floor. Please stop by for giveaway cards and stickers. You might even catch me and/or Israel Idonije at the booth.

A few more tidbits for NYCC:

My Shinku partner-in-crime, artist Lee Moder, will be set up in Artist Alley all weekend, taking commissions all weekend. He’ll be at table Z19B. cost is $100 for a full figure, and $40 for a head shot. Having seen the many commissions Lee produced at the Baltimore Comic Con, I can tell you first hand that his prices are a bargain.

Lee will also have copies of the long-delayed Shinku #5 for sale at his table. The issue doesn’t actually hit stores until Oct. 17, so this is your chance to get an early copy. I’ll be hanging out at Lee’s table when I have the chance, especially on Sunday.

Artist’s Alley is set up in the North Pavilion this year, which can be reached via a walkway. I would urge you to make the time to visit Artist’s Alley, despite the location not being completely convenient. Setting up for a show like NYCC is expensive, and the artists could use the support. An interactive map of Artists Alley can be found here:

NYCC 2011 Schedule

Looks like I’ll be making an appearance at New York Comic Con after all. Originally, I was to have been at Fest Comix in Sao Paulo, Brazil this weekend. But a delay in the visa process at the Brazilian consulate made that trip impossible. All apologies to everyone at Fest Comix. I’m already talking with the organizers of the show about making the trip to Fest Comix a reality in 2012.

So since I’m not going to Brazil this weekend, I’ll be making the much shorter trip to the Jacob Javits Center on the west side of Manhattan for the New York Comic Con. I’ll only be there Friday and Saturday, with most of my signings at the Image/Top Cow booth (schedule below). I’m also trying to work out time for a signing at the Archaia booth, which will have some advance copies of the Storyteller and Immortals hardcover anthologies, to which I contributed stories with my buddies Craig Rousseau and Rafael Kayanan, respectively. Check at the Archaia booth for the latest schedule.
I expect to have copies of Shinku #1 and #2 for sale at my Image signings. Come buy them so I don’t have to carry them home!

Friday

10:45-11:30 a.m., signing at Archaia booth, #1546, with Nate Cosby (Storyteller)

Noon-1 p.m. Friday, signing at Immortals booth, #444, with Rafael Kayanan (Immortals)

5-6 p.m., signing at Image booth with Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley (Artifacts)

6-7 p.m., signing at Image booth with Nelson Blake 2nd and Keu Cha (Magdalena)

Saturday

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., signing at Image booth with Whilce Portacio and John Tyler Christoper (Artifacts)

1:30-2:30 p.m., signing at Image booth with Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley (Artifacts)

2:30-3:30 p.m., signing at Image booth with Nelson Blake 2nd and Keu Cha (Magdalena)

4-5 p.m., Top Cow panel in Room 1A15

Cheers,

Ron

Convention Schedule

My convention schedule for 2011 is starting to take shape. These are the shows for which I’m confirmed. More will be added if other shows are confirmed … though to be perfectly honest, I really like spending weekends with my family.

I’ll be set up at the Top Cow booth at Emerald City and Baltimore, and likely NYCC. For the other shows, I’ll be set up solo.

Cheers,

Ron

ONE MORE VIDEO

One more video shot at New York Comic Con last fall has surfaced, with me talking about what’s going on in the Witchblade and Magdalena monthlies. Enjoy!

Cheers,

Ron

Video link has been fixed!

One more video

An additional video interview from the New York Comic Con popped up on Newsarama, so here ’tis. As I recall, I could barely turn my head most of the weekend, as I’d somehow slept wrong and woke up with a stiff neck the night before heading into NYC. One of those chair massages managed to loosen the muscles in my neck just enough to make the weekend tolerable. But probably not enough to keep me from looking awkward in these videos.

Cheers,

Ron

Con updates

Two convention updates before I hop the train to the New York Comic Con tomorrow morning.

The first concerns NYCC itself. Originally, Saturday’s Image Comics panel, which I’m supposed to be on, was scheduled for 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Room 1A22. But for some reason the con moved the panel to a 1:15-2:15 p.m. time slot, which directly conflicts with the Top Cow panel in Room 1A06. I don’t have an explanation as to why. So I’ll be trying to make about half of each panel, dashing from one room to the other about halfway through. Sounds like fun.

The other announcement concerns my trip to Melbourne, Australia and Auckand, New Zealand the latter half of October. Unfortunately, I’ve had to pull out of the trip due to work commitments. Here’s my statement that went up at the Armageddon Expo website:

“It’s with much regret that I have to announce I won’t be joining fans at Armageddon Expo’s Melbourne and Auckland events this month. I want to extend my sincerest apologies at having to cancel. An unforeseen confluence of deadlines forced me to choose between my work commitments and the convention appearances. Unfortunately, the work has to come first, so in the interest of getting a number of my books to press on time, I won’t be able to attend the shows. I was looking forward to visiting Australia and New Zealand more than I can say, and I’m far more disappointed than anyone at this turn of events. I sincerely hope I’ll have another opportunity to make the trip in the future, so I can meet everyone I’m missing this time around. Again, please accept my apologies.”

So … that sucks. Very sorry to miss the shows. But getting the books out is paramount. Sigh.

Cheers,

Ron

New York Comic Con

I’ll be at the New York Comic Con this Friday, Oct.8, through Sunday, Oct. 10, held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Manhattan’s West Side. NYCC has quickly grown to be second only to the San Diego convention in size and importance.

My “home base” for the con will be the Top Cow booth, #2129. Rather than a set signing schedule, I’ll generally be at the booth to sign and chat when I’m not scheduled to be elsewhere. If I’m not around, you can ask one of the booth personnel when I’ll be back, or even to track me down. Two of my artistic collaborators, Michael Broussard of Artifacts and Nelson Blake 2nd ofMagdalena, will also be among the Cow herd for the show.

Top Cow will also be offering two con exclusive covers, both of which happen to be my books. Stjepan Sejic painted new covers for Artifacts #2 and Witchblade #138, both of which will be available at the booth. And if you’re around the booth at the right times, you might just bump into Aphrodite IV. She might even hand you a nice green balloon.

Here’s the rest of my public schedule for each day:

FRIDAY

4:30-5:30 p.m., Image Comics: The Writers panel, Room 1A14. I’ll be joined by fellow writers Robert Kirkman, Nick Spencer and Steve Seagle for a discussion of the writing process, and a Q & A session. Though, let’s face it, we’re gonna end up talking about Robert’s The Walking Dead quite a bit. And deservedly so.

SATURDAY

12:15-1:15 p.m., The Image Comics Show, Room 1A22. This is Image’s “company” panel, with announcements, updates, and a Q & A session. Other panelists scheduled are Joe Kelly, Ben McCool, John Layman and James Zhang. I suspect The Walking Dead will come up again.

1:15-2:15 p.m., Top Cow panel, Room 1A06. I’ll be on the panel, along with Filip Sablik, Michael Broussard, Jeff Katz of American Original and GeekWeek.com, Russ Cundiff of DiVide Pictures, and actor and comic geek Milo Ventimiglia (of “Heroes” fame). Expect Artifacts discussion (hopefully we can get just-announced artist Whilce Portacio to swing by), as well as some announcements of upcoming projects. Those who attend the panel can get a ticket for Milo’s autograph session that will follow immediately afterward.

4:30-5 p.m., signing at Graphic.ly booth, #1751. If you definitely want to get something signed, this might be the best time, as I absolutely know I’ll be here for at least 30 minutes.

SUNDAY

11 a.m.-noon, Writing Comics panel, Room 1A23. Billed as a “nuts-and-bolts discussion to help aspiring writers,” I’ll be joined by Paul Levitz, Jim McCann and Chris Eliopoulos. And hopefully a gallon jug of coffee.

One more NYCC note. My friends in the band Kirby Krackle will be playing gigs both Friday and Saturday night in the city. Check out their site for the details, as well as some pretty awesome music:

Cheers,

Ron

That’s the Chicago way

Yes, that’s a reference to Sean Connery in “The Untouchables.”

I’m headed to the new C2E2 convention in Chicago this weekend, put on by Reed Exhibitions, the same folks who put on the New York Comic Con. C2E2 is being held at McCormick Place on South Lake Shore Drive. I’m looking forward to actually being in Chicago. Wizard’s Chicago convention was/is held in Rosemont, outside the city. Though there are now more hotel and restaurant choices in Rosemont, for a long time attending that show was like being marooned on Comic Island. Pretty much the only other people you encountered were there for the con. Well, except for the year that one of the hotels was also playing host to a Beatles convention, which meant a lot of people sitting in the halls at 3 a.m. playing “Blackbird” on acoustic guitars. Badly.

I only made it into Chicago from Rosemont once, when artist and Chicago resident Gary Gianni picked me up and gave me a tour of the city. We ended up eating at a Thai restaurant not far from Wrigley Field. Great night.

Top Cow will be debuting Magdalena #1 at C2E2. The issue won’t be in comic stores until next week, but we’ll have copies for sale at the show, with a C2E2-exclusive variant cover (shown below). The series artist, my buddy Nelson Blake 2nd, will be at the show as well, and we’ll be signing all three days. I’m pretty damn pleased with how the issue turned out.

I’m also looking forward to meeting Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, a big-time comics fan, and a Top Cow fan in particular. I’ll be joining Lance for his panel Saturday afternoon, and then he’s going to sit in for the Top Cow panel Saturday evening. Note that Saturday’s programming continues even after the convention floor closes.

My complete C2E2 schedule looks like this:

Friday

4:30-5:30 p.m., signing at Top Cow booth with Nelson Blake 2nd.

Saturday

11:30-1:00 p.m., signing at Top Cow booth with Nelson Blake 2nd and Troy Peteri.

3-4 p.m., panel with Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, Phil Hester, Mark Waid, Nelson Blake 2nd and Matt Banning.

7:15-8:15 p.m., Top Cow panel with Filip Sablik, Phil Hester, Nelson Blake 2nd and an appearance by Lance Briggs.

Sunday

11:30-12:30 p.m., signing at Top Cow booth with Nelson Blake 2nd.

If you’re at the show, please come by and say hi. More info on C2E2 here:

Cheers,

Ron
