Jersey Bound for FCBD 2014

For this year’s Free Comic Book Day on May 3, I’ll be appearing at Level Up Entertainment at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, NJ, near Atlantic City. In addition to signing anything and everything you’d care to bring by, I’ll be conducting a workshop on the step by step process of creating a comic.
The last few years I’ve stayed local for FCBD, but Level Up lured me away for this year. Complete information and schedule can be found at Level Up’s website:

FCBD This Saturday, May 4

This year for Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4, I’ll be returning to Comic Depot in Saratoga Spring, NY, and Excellent Adventures in Ballston Spa, NY. They’re both, well, excellent stores, and in the area where I live, which enables me attend my son’s Opening Day ceremonies for the Little League team I coach.

I hope to be at Comic Depot, with is located in the Wilton Mall, by noon or so, and then rotate over to Excellent Adventures by about 2:30 p.m., and stay until 5 p.m. Other creators signing include Richard P. Clark, Matthew Dow Smith, Paul Harding, Jennifer Meyer, Christian St. Pierre and legendary Marvel inker Joe Sinnott.

In addition to some great sales, both stores will have the selection of FCBD titles that publishers have offered up, including the Liquid Comics FCBD title that features stories by me and artists Mike Oeming, Jim Starlin, Luke Ross, David Petersen and Bart Sears. Excellent Adventures and Comic Depot will also have a special FCBD comic that we’ve created, which will not be available anywhere else. There are two covers, one by Jennifer Meyer featuring Miss Depot, and one by Joe Sinnott featuring Captain E.A., at the respective stores.

The story inside is written by me, drawn by Paul Harding and Matthew Dow Smith, with tones and design by Richard Clark, and lettering by Troy Peteri. The pages take you through the step-by-step process of creating a comic, and present a meeting between Miss Depot and Captain E.A. The comic is free, but limited, so get to the stores early.

FCBD is like Christmas for the comics industry. I hope you can make it out to one of the shops to say hi, and get some free comics!

Hey Kids! Free Comics!

I’ll be making two appearances for Free Comic Book Day on May 7. First up is the Comic Depot in the Wilton Mall on Route 50 in Saratoga Springs, NY. I’ll be signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also on hand will be sculptor and artist Paul Harding, illustrator Richard Kane Ferguson and Strong Arm Labs. More info on Comic Depot here:

In the afternoon, I’ll be signing from 2 to 4 p.m. at Excellent Adventures, 110 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa, NY. Paul Harding will be along as well, and so will artist Christian St. Pierre. More info on Excellent Adventures here:

Both stores will have a limited number of copies of the FCBD offering I wrote this year, which is Silver Scorpion from Liquid Comics. The concept for Silver Scorpion was jointly created by handicapped school children from the United States and Syria, as part of a project sponsored by the Open Hands Initiative. I wrote the script, and the incredible Mukesh Singh provided the art. I have to admit, it’s pretty cool to have written a comic with a quote on the back by President Bill Clinton. A preview of Silver Scorpion can be seen here:

My friend Jen will be at both signings, posing for photos in her awesome Magdalena costume, so if you don’t show up for me, at least show up for her. For More information on Free Comic Book Day:

Free Comic Book Day in Boston

And the whirlwind tour continues. I’ll be in Boston for Free Comic Book Day this Saturday, May 1, signing at two New England Comics locations. I’ll be at the Brockton store from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and at the Harvard Square store from 4 to 7 p.m. More info can be had here.

I’ll be happy to sign anything you bring, but obviously the big item is going to be Artifacts #0, Top Cow’s FCBD offering for 2010. I wrote the story, and my Witchblade and Angelus collaborator Stjepan Sejic provided the art, with some sweet design work by Phil Smith. The story, which focuses on green-haired cyborg assassin Aphrodite IV, serves as a lead-in to this summer’s Artifacts 13-issue maxi-series. If you’re not all that familiar with the mechanics of the Top Cow Universe, this serves as a primer, setting up the important concepts and characters. If you’re already a regular reader, the issue moves the story further along, and drops some hints of what’s to come. A four-page preview can be found here.

We went for a stark cover, hoping it would stand out among the plethora of FCBD titles being offered. Guess I’ll be signing copies with a silver Sharpie, rather than a black one, huh? Hope some of you can make it out to the signings.

Showing Patience

Here’s a quick interview link for you while I’ve had my head down getting two books off to press this week: Artifacts #0, which is the Free Comic Book Day offering, and Magdalena #1). The FCBD issue serves as an intro to Artifacts, and gives a pretty expansive intro to the Top Cow Universe. I’ll be at a couple of New England Comics locations in the Boston area for Free Comic Book Day on May 1. More information on that soon.

The interview gives an overview of the upcoming Magdalena series, and shows off a few final art pages from the series. You can see the interview here.

Deadline doom

The dreaded deadline doom has been nipping at my heels, so the blog posts haven’t been as plentiful as I would’ve hoped the last week. I had an issue going to press last week, and two more heading off to press this week, so that means more time devoted to tweaking dialogue, proofing pages and all the rest of the tasks that go with putting an issue to bed. To tide you over, here are links to various stories on my work both past and present.

Hope you find something you like.
