In Stores This Week

Two new issues on the stands for me this week, as both Artifacts #12 and Voodoo #4 reach stores.

Artifacts #12, the last issue in artist Jeremy Haun’s tenure on the series, brings the storyline to a head in a big way. To say much more than that would spoil the fun. The origin backup features the Thirteenth Artifact, with art by Michael Broussard. There’s a nine-page preview of the issue here:

Artifacts #13 will be in stores next Wednesday, Jan. 4, so you won’t have to wait long to see how the storyline winds up … and how the stage is set for the ongoing Artifacts series.

Voodoo #4 is also out this Wednesday. It’s my last issue on the title, for reasons that, unfortunately, are still unclear to me, beyond DC wanting a “different direction” for the book. I absolutely loved working with my art team of Sami Basri and Jessica Kholinne, and hope to work with them again soon. I’d also like to thank my immediate editors on the book. I had three editors over the course of four issues, but all of them were a pleasure to deal with: Brian Cunningham, Rex Ogle and Bobbie Chase, ably assisted by Darren Shan and Katie Kubert. Best of luck to everyone from issue #5 onward.

You can see a preview of Voodoo #4 here:

In stores this week

Can’t remember the last time I actually had four issues hit stores on the same day, but that’s the case Wednesday: Voodoo #1, Witchblade #148, Magdalena #8, and Artifacts #10.

All the issues were actually completed in different weeks, as I recall, but the vagaries of the shipping schedule sometimes result in a week like this. I’ll be signing all four issues, plus whatever else you have, at Midtown Comics Downtown, 64 Fulton St. in NYC, from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Witchblade issue is part 3 of the “Tiamat” storyline, with Stjepan Sejic on art, with an appearance by the Angelus. Magdalena is the second and final part of Keu Cha’s guest spot on art, and features a battle in the rain atop Notre Dame. Artifacts reveals more about the bearer of the mysterious 13th Artifact, with art by Jeremy Haun and Sunny Gho.

Voodoo #1

Voodoo, of course, is part of DC’s New 52 initiative, and already has sold out at distributor level (though stores should have copies on the shelves for at least a few days). A second printing is on the way. Hope you give it a try.

In stores this week

New in stores this week is Artifacts Volume 2 TPB, collecting issues #5 through #8 of the series, plus the text pieces that have appeared in all of the issues. The art, of course, is by Whilce Portacio, who brought a kinetic energy to these issues as the more sci-fi side of the Top Cow Universe is brought into the story.
Next week is a big one for me, with four different issues releasing.

Artifacts #5 Scorecard

Artifacts #5 hit stores the end of January, and here’s ourusual review scorecard. The issues marks Whilce Portacio’s debut as artist, taking over on the second arc after Michael Broussard’s start turn on the first arc. I’m pretty biased, but this is some of my favorite Whilce work ever. Wait ’til you see the epic fight that takes place in issue #6.

I also want to direct you toward a new podcast called “Doughnuts and Top Cow,” which is currently examining each issue of Artifacts. The episodes can be found here.

Comic Geek Speak’s episode 1009 also takes on Artifacts #5. Give a listen.

Artifacts for Tots update

Haven’t had a chance to post an update after the last post on Artifacts for Tots, but I wanted to make sure it got done before we got too far beyond the holidays. Thanks to your generosity, more than $300 was raised via the Artifacts for Tots offer. Rather than simply donating the money, I wanted to be certain everything we raised was put to use this year. So a few days before Christmas my wife and I made a trip to the local Toys R Us and filled two shopping carts to overflowing with toys for both boys and girls, toddlers to teens. We dropped off all the loot – which filled the back of our Volvo – at the Air National Guard base in Scotia, NY, where the Marine unit coordinating the collection in based. We were going to take a photo of the toys with the Marines who helped us unload everything, but it was so viciously cold and windy that day, I didn’t want to ask them to stay outside any longer than necessary.

I have a few Artifacts #1 copies left, so if you want one, you can still get it. I’ll tuck the donation away for next year. I’ll definitely do something similar for Christmas 2011. Thanks again to everyone who donated.

Artifacts #4 Scorecard

As with previous issues of my event series from Top Cow, here’s a one-stop-shopping collection of reviews for Artifacts #4. The issue marks the completion of the first arc of the 13-issue series, and Michael Broussard’s swansong as penciler. Issue #5 is already in the can, with While Portacio taking over on pencils, Joe Weems on inks and Sunny Gho on colors. Obviously I’m a bit biased, but I think the Artifacts #5 pages are some of Whilce’s best work ever, and Joe’s inks and Sunny’s colors are meshing seamlessly. Whilce’s two-page Blood Sword/Ian Nottingham origin in issue #4 is an appetizer for what’s to come.

Issue #5, which introduces Cyberforce into the storyline, will be in stores on Jan. 26, the same day that the Artifacts vol. 1 TPB hits shelves. The TPB collects issue #0 and issues #1-#4, as well as a cover gallery and other extras, for a bargain price of $9.99.

Artifacts for Tots

If you follow me on Twitter – and thank you if you do – you might have seen a mention of this last week. I try to make sure I donate to Toys for Tots every holiday season, and I’ll definitely do so again this year. I usually make a run to a toy store in early December, grab a bunch of toys, and donate them at our kids’ elementary school, which has a toy drive every year. Or, more specifically, we have our kids bring in the toys and donate them, because I feel like giving to charity is an important lesson to impart. I also remember how magical Christmas was for me as a child, and I hope the donations can help bring someone else that experience.

So here’s what I’m doing. I have a stack of Artifacts #1 copies here, which I’ll be autographing and mailing out in exchange for a donations that I’ll collect and give to Toys for Tots. ALL proceeds will go to Toys for Tots, I’m not keeping anything.

The cost per Artifacts #1 issue is $13; essentially, $10 for the autographed issue, and $3 to cover first class postage. If you want more than one issue, the cost is $10 for any additional issues, and another $1 for additional postage. So two issues would be $24, three issues would be $35, and so on.

All issues will be autographed by me, and I’ll be more than happy to personalize any and all copies. Just to me know who you want the issue to be signed “to.” The issues will be the third-print edition of Artifacts #1 (cover shown here), also known as “Cover L.” For anybody who hasn’t read the issue, it contains some graphic violence and some swearing, so it’s not exactly a kid-friendly comic.

The easiest way to do this is through Paypal. The address attached to the Paypal account is: kmarz@nycap.rr.com.

When you make the donation, be sure to include all the information I’m going to need: how many issues you want, where the issues should be mailed, and to whom the issues should be signed (if you want them personalized). The goal will be to get issues into the mail within 24 hours of purchase. For anyone who doesn’t have a Paypal account, please use the Contact button on this website and drop me an e-mail; we’ll figure out something. Any questions or concerns, again, use the Contact button.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes advantage of this. Let’s raise a bunch of money that will go to Toys for Tots.

Artifacts #3 Scorecard

As with the past two issues, here’s a collection of the reviews I’ve come across for Artifacts #3. If you happen to know of any reviews that aren’t linked below, feel free to post a link in the comments. Artifacts #4 should be in stores in a few weeks, bringing the first act of the storyline to an explosive conclusion. Literally.

One more video

An additional video interview from the New York Comic Con popped up on Newsarama, so here ’tis. As I recall, I could barely turn my head most of the weekend, as I’d somehow slept wrong and woke up with a stiff neck the night before heading into NYC. One of those chair massages managed to loosen the muscles in my neck just enough to make the weekend tolerable. But probably not enough to keep me from looking awkward in these videos.

Albany Comic Con this Sunday

One benefit from having to miss the Armageddon Expo event in New Zealand this weekend is that I’ll be able to attend the Albany Comic Con again, at least for a few hours. As with previous shows, it’s being held at the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road in Albany, NY from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24.

Other guests include artists Mike McKone, Matthew Dow Smith, Herb Trimpe, Joe Staton, Fred Hembeck, Mike Borkowski, Declan Shalvey, Mark McKenna, and Bobby and Peter Timony; sculptor Paul Harding; writers Todd Dezago, Keith Dallas and Nick Tapalansky; and plenty more. Legendary Fantastic Four inker Joe Sinnott, still recovering from surgery, is scheduled to stop by to sign for a few hours in the afternoon. Admission is only $5. The show site is here.

I’ll only be at the show until around 2 p.m., when I have to leave to coach my son’s final fall baseball game. I’ll have some Magdalena posters and Artifacts bookmarks to give away, a stack of Artifacts #1 copies to unload, and some other goodies. Hope to see some of you.
